A precision attachment is mechanical devices made up of two or more parts. One part is connected to a tooth, root or implant, the other to an artificial prosthesis to provide mechanical connection between the two. Attachments are used as alternative to clasps in removable partial denture therapy for both aesthetic and functional purpose. Their application is not only limited to removable partial dentures, but has a broader usage in fixed bridges, over dentures, implant supported dentures as well. Although added preparations and skills are required to provide precision attachment more favorable esthetics and load distribution which may outweigh the disadvantages. This article reviews different systems of classifying these devices to provide an overview of the designs available.
