A study to assess the psychosocial distress among caregivers of schizophrenic patients at selected hospital, Puducherry

Schizophrenia is a serious mental disorder that has a dramatic impact not only in patients suffering from it but in their families as well (Weisman, 2005). Due to the move from traditional institutional care to community care of psychiatric patients, relatives have become the most important caregivers for adults with major psychiatric disorders (Solomon, 1996). A Quantitative Research approach was adopted for this present study. The descriptive research design was chosen for this present study. The study was conducted at selected Hospital Puducherry.30 caregivers of schizophrenic patients were selected for the study. Convenience sampling technique was adopted for this present study. psychosocial distress questionnaire prepared by the investigator was used to assess the psychosocial distress among caregivers of schizophrenic patients. Out of 30 samples 20% of them has normal level 67% of them has mild psychosocial distress, 13% of them has moderate psychosocial distress , none of them has severe psychosocial distress.
